The Program

View Slide Show

We base our program on the theory that people need to work towards and accomplish goals in order to build self-esteem and an enthusiasm for life. Many of today's teens are not required to work for the nice things they have. As a result, they don't feel motivated to accomplish anything. This can result in problems such as low self-esteem, poor performance in school, or laziness. Our program at Horizon Ranch is a three phase program designed to help boys gain motivation, learn self-reliance skills, and build self-esteem. Even though these phases are listed separately the skills and activities noted will cross over throughout the program. We offer flexible enrollment options from 2 weeks up to 12 weeks. The regular 12 week enrollment period will include everything listed below whereas other options cannot include the entire curriculum.

Phase One - Practical Skills
This phase is intended to be a challenge for the boys to surmount. It is there to motivate the boys to learn the necessary skills in order to be able to work effectively out on the ranch. In Practical Skills Phase the boys build self-esteem, become physically fit, gain basic skills, set goals, and work towards achieving them. They have time for personal and spiritual reflection and they attend learning seminars throughout the course. We make sure the boys are safe and have guidance throughout this phase.

Practical Skills Activities could include but are not limited to the following:
Goal Setting
Obstacle Course
Team Building
Cultivation
Outdoor Cooking
Flag Etiquette
Leather Working
Wood Carving
Basic Mechanics

Phase Two - Ranch Work
In this phase the boys will be working on the ranch doing work projects and learning skills. The boys will feel it a privilege to work, which is something we stress heavily at Horizon Ranch. Work is not drudgery; it is a chance to accomplish something and gain rewards doing it. The boys will be involved in projects such as gardening, working with the animals, running fence, bucking hay, building, cleaning, and other ranch activities. They will also take part in community service projects. They will continue to maintain physical fitness, set goals, pass requirements, attend learning seminars, and have personal and spiritual reflection time.

Skills Activities could include but are not limited to the following:
First Aid
Camping
Fire building
Knot Tying
Water Purification

He will work closely with our staff as he learns the skills necessary to be a leader. He will have the opportunity to attend leadership seminars and he will have ample time to study and accomplish the necessary requirements to graduate from our program.
